Dom Columba Marmion

The Beatification 3rd September 2000
Speeches / Homelies

Speech of M.Charles-Ferdinand Nothomb, Minister of State
Residence of the Belgian Ambassador to the Holy See

Speech of H.E. Mr. Charles-Ferdinand Nothomb, State Minister
(Official Dinner at the Belgian Embassy)

The beatification of Dom Marmion brings us indeed together this evening. Every single person present here tonight shares in the pride and joy of the event. But why is it that the Belgian government is so particularly happy and feels so deeply honoured by this beatification ? Because Dom Marmion crowned now with glory by the Church, was not a Belgian by an accident of nature. He chose to be a Belgian citizen and served our country by his inspiration and his radiance.

Of course, the Divine call came first, it was born and bred in Ireland, but it bloomed and bore fruit in Belgium. It was from our country Dom Marmion's intellectual influence spread, his spirit of independence and his view of monastic life.

Dom Marmion headed an abbey, which means he was extremely useful to a regional and a national community. He was the friend, the spiritual inspirer and the support of Cardinal Mercier, the Church leader who personified the spirit of independence of occupied Belgium. Thus again he was serving the nation. He set the example during the first World War, when he came back from Ireland to occupied Belgium and refused to receive the German emperor who has wanted to visit Maredsous. This also was to the benefit of the Belgian people. Next, after the war, his spiritual thought, translated into seventeen languages, spread from Maredsous all around the world. It enhanced Belgium's spiritual influence. In the same way a scientist working in his laboratory can heighten a nation's scientific radiance. If the scientist wins a Nobel prize, international acknowledgement will follow automatically. Dom Marmion wins more than a Nobel prize today, the Church will beatify him.

Our country is not only the country often best known for its matter-of-facts realism, it is also a country that provides the Church and the whole world with a fertile spiritual inspiration.

His Majesty the King and the Belgian government are proud that the Church acknowledges Dom Marmion's exceptional merit.
