Dom Columba Marmion

The Beatification the 3rd September 2000

Pope John-Paul II proclaimed as Blessed, Dom Columba Marmion, 3rd Abbot of Maredsous.

Popes Pius IX and John XXIII were also beatified that day, as were Father Chaminade, founder of the Marianists, and Tomaso Reggio, the bishop of Genoa.

The beatification, decided by a pope who was himself a fervent reader of the works of Dom Marmion, located the latter within the framework of the two roman pontificates that mark the century between Vatican Council I, 1870 and Vatican Council II of 1962–1965.

The spirituality of Blessed Columba of Maredsous has certainly helped the People of God to adapt their attitude vis-a-vis the 'modern' world and prepare for the developments being experienced today. Pope Jean-Paul II appointed 3rd October to be the date of the feast of Blessed Columba Marmion.
